Into the Peninsula!

We have been off the grid since Thursday, but not idle! We left Willow/Wasilla area on Thursday morning and headed for the Kenai Peninsula. We decided to "take our chances" on getting a camping spot at Quartz Creek State Park, deemed the prettiest state park in Alaska.

What a beautiful trip south! Approaching Anchorage you have a wonderful view of the Chugach Mountains and Chugach State Forest. Once you connect with the Seward Highway and hit Turnagain Arm, the views are SPECTACULAR! Snow capped peaks plus Cook Inlet-can it get any better???? I could take pictures at every turn!

We arrived at Quartz Creek to discover there were 3 sites left! You can decide from the picture, but it is definitely a pretty campsite. The Kenai River is on one side and Kenai Lake, the other. The water is a beautiful aquamarine.

We did a great float trip down the Kenai river and onto the famous Russian River- famous for prize fishing! Bob took a guided fishing trip on Saturday and it rained all day. He still had fun and caught fish. I spent the day in the camper- made chili, read, read, read and edited pictures down from 715 to 415!Who wants to come to my home slide show?????

Sunday morning we broke camp, in the rain yet again! We only drove about 60 miles south to Kenai City. We are sitting, looking out on Cook Inlet, where the Kenai River flows into the ocean. This is prime Beluga Whale watching territory, so the watch is out!

Of note- at Quartz Creek we were surrounded by Alaskan families with young children. The rain did not keep any of them inside. The women, men and kids were in their boots and raincoats-outside, having a good time. When we went to bed they were around a campfire having a good time. I woke up at 1:00, briefly, and heard them still outside having fun. They count the minutes of sunlight they are losing each day-it's part of the weather report on TV. Who can blame them? In Anchorage they go from 19 hours of daylight in June down to 5 hours in December.

The pictures are from the drive through Turnagin Arm, Quartz Creek, the float trip, Russian and Kenai Rivers all near Cooper Landing, AK.

  1. You'r refreshing great memories of a wonderful trip. Thanks. We were in the Kenai area during the week that locals could dipnet for salmon. That was quit a sight. We also had a delightful afternoon in the little town of Hope on the south side of Turnigan Arm-due north of Quartz Creek.
